KENYAN NEWLY ELECTED SENATORS AND MEMBERS OF PARLIAMENT TAKE OATH OF OFFICE

Newly elected Senators and Members of Parliament today took Oath of Office, swearing to obey respect uphold preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of Kenya. They also swore to faithfully and conscientiously discharge the duties of their respective offices.

The Members of Parliament bear the legislative responsibility which includes laws and regulations for combating graft and economic crimes. Their duties include authorizing budget allocations and oversight on expenditure of public resources by all public institutions through the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament. The MPs have also been in charge of the Constituency Development Funds (CDF). The expenditure of these funds saw some legislators and Board members fall into the trap of corruption with some ending up in court.

The 67 Senators who include elected and nominated members bear the responsibility of oversight over the affairs of 47 County Governments including expenditure of their budgets, or any arising issues such as impeachments arising from misconduct in discharge of their duties.

Accordingly, today’s event is critical to the fight against corruption as the Oath they undertake serves as a safeguard and an assurance that the leaders will act as per the Constitution and the will of the people of Kenya in discharging their duties.
