Attempts by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko Mbuvi to run for Mombasa County governorship hit a snag after residents moved to Court to stop it.
Mike Sonko who was impeached as the Governor, Nairobi County with corruption related offenses been given the ticket to vie as a Mombasa Governor, leading to an uproar.
Following the development, Mombasa residents filed a petition to bar the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) from clearing Sonko for the Mombasa governorship.
The two Ndoro Kaguya and George Odhiambo through lawyer Willis Oluga, accused Wiper party of nominating Sonko, despite him being unfit for office. Kaguya stated that Wiper contravened Article 75 (3) of the Constitution since Sonko was on December 17, 2020, impeached from Nairobi Governorship.
He was alleged of violating Article 75 (1) (c) of the Constitution by behaving in a manner that demeaned the office of a County Governor. The two argued that Sonko is not fit for public office, since the impeachment was upheld by the High Court and The Court of Appeal.
The two petitioners say that the former Governor harassed and molested officers, as well as blackmailed them. Further, they argued that he unlawfully used public funds to send his daughter to New York, USA; he was also found guilty of enjoying hefty allowances besides having the privilege of public office. Sonko is also accused of lacking integrity by irregularly g work as Nairobi Governor.
Citizens have now joined the Government in the war against graft, especially ahead of The August elections. Apart from the two filing a petition against Sonko, civil society groups are now up in arms against politicians lining up to vie for public office in the August 9 elections.
The Kenya Human Rights Commission, Transparency International, Inuka Kenya ni Sisi and activist Wanjiru Gikonyo have now petitioned the High Court to prod the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) for lowering the integrity bar by welcoming politicians of all walks of life and with questionable character to contest.
