Two Mombasa residents filed a petition yesterday seeking to bar the independent electoral and boundaries commission (IEBC) from clearing former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko for the Mombasa governorship race.
The two residents Ndoro Kaguya and George Odhiambo are seeking conservatory orders from Mombasa high court to stop IEBC from clearing Sonko. The petitioners argued that Sonko is unfit to hold public office. Additionally, they said wiper party contravened article 75 (3) of the constitution.
Sonko was removed from the office of Nairobi governor through impeachment for violating article 75 (1) (c) of the constitution by behaving in a manner that demeaned the office of a county governor on December 17, 2020.
Integrity of leaders implicated on corruption addresses the major setback in the fight against corruption. Sonko who has been on the spot for corruption in his past Nairobi leadership is an indication that legal frameworks in the fight against corruption should be tightened in order to remove corrupt culprits.
