Former Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi was today elected the Speaker of the Senate. The election took place at the first sitting of Senate and was conducted in accordance with the House Standing Orders.
Kingi is a member of the Kenya Kwanza Coalition was elected by 46 Senators. The members of the Azimio La Umoja staged a walkout as some questioned the integrity of the elections. Kingi will preside over the 13th Parliament of Kenya. Seven applicants had vied before Azimio La Umjoa’s Kalonzo Musyoka withdrew his candidature.
Upon declaration as the unanimous winner, Kingi immediately took Oath of Office swearing to uphold the Constitutional responsibilities and duties of his new office.
According to the Senate Clerk Nyenye, seven candidates were validly nominated as at the close of the nomination period among them; Isaac Aluochier, George Bush, Karuri Fredrick Muchiri, Kingi Amason Kefa, Kinyua Beatrice Gathomi, Kuria George Njoroge and Musyoka Stephen Klaonzo,
Kathuri Murungi of Kenya Kwanza was elected Deputy Speaker Senate.
